MEMPHIS KRATOM FAQ'S
Mitragyna speciosa (ketum, kratom, or kratum) is a tropical deciduous and evergreen tree in the coffee family (Rubiaceae), with a long history of medicinal use in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. It is chemically related to the coffee bean and kola nut.
In low dosages of a few grams of leaf, kratom is used primarily as a stimulant, with effects similar to caffeine without the marked jitteriness of stimulants like coffee. In intermediate doses, it has been reported to have anti-anxiety properties. In higher dosages, kratom functions similarly to painkillers, but does not contain the chemical properties of dangerous, addictive controlled substances like oxycodone or morphine.
There are an estimated 10-15 million users of Kratom in the United States, with 3 million daily users being reported.
The reasons for Kratom’s use are as varied as they are historical. The FDA endorses no claims as to the efficacy and uses of Kratom, but as you would expect from a plant with a 3000-year recorded history, Kratom has reportedly been taken by its users for many reasons.
- Chronic pain
- Opiate and alcohol withdrawal
- Sexual stamina and performance
- Appetite suppression
- Anxiety and depression
- Immune system boost
- Energetic and stimulant properties
- Menstrual cramps
- And many others
One of the primary active alkaloids in kratom, 7-hydroxymitragynine, is a complex one acting as both a mu agonist and antagonist – it both inhibits and excites the receptor. It is for this reason that the push-and-pull effect of Kratom is believed not pose the addiction potential of opiate medications. It is also why Japanese researchers have patented 7-hydroxymitragynine for future medicinal applications – and why the pharmaceutical companies hate it.
The DEA has completely misrepresented the science to you – they are in the business of prohibition. In thousands of years of recorded use, when used solely as a stand-alone uncompounded leaf product, Kratom has not been recorded in a single fatal overdose incident. Incidents of “kratom overdose” that pop up to scare America are just that: Scare tactics.
In 2019, there were 91 calls to poison control centers for Kratom. There were 37 reported overdoses. In every single overdose – every one – the person had taken an extreme amount of Kratom extracts with prescription drugs or alcohol…or both. And in many cases, it was unclear if kratom had even been ingested. The reason for the lack of overdoses from Kratom is clear too: alcohol and many prescription drugs depress the respiratory system. Kratom’s alkaloids do not.
In fact, even scare stories from drug rehab centers overstate the addiction and withdrawal potential of Kratom. For the minority of users that do report withdrawal symptoms, the effects are mild – no worse than caffeine. And, again, this makes sense, since Kratom is chemically related to the coffee plant.
Such risks that exist, exist from taking Kratom with other drugs, often in high doses – and that is a risk common to all medicinal plants, alcohol, and prescription drugs. Or, they exist from ingesting dangerous gas station and head shop “extracts” – formulations where the active alkaloid has been removed from the leaf and is often dozens of times stronger than natural leaf products.
Memphis Kratom sells only 100% fresh, organic, FDA lab-tested kratom leaf powders.
The science is simply not on the side of prohibitionists, drug warriors, rehab peddlers and others who for far too long have made a handsome living off the incarceration industry. Addiction is real. Addiction is painful. Addiction ruins lives and takes them. Kratom has reportedly helped millions escape this scourge. And that is why it is gaining in popularity every day. And again, that is why the drug companies despise it. There is nothing more dangerous to Big Pharma than a plant that gives you energy, a sense of well-being, that helps with pain relief and insomnia, that is relatively inexpensive. and that does not keep you a slave to prescription bottles.
We are in this business to make money, and we ask for your business. But we are also in this business to educate consumers. Get the facts.
The AKA Good Manufacturing Standards Program (GMP) by the American Kratom Association to establish a higher level of manufacturing processes for Kratom vendors. AKA GMP vendors undergo rigorous third-party lab-testing and independent verification of the product to ensure that you are purchasing a product:
- That is what it says it is – the plant material is actually Kratom
- That contains no pathogens or other contaminants, like salmonella etc.
- That does does not contain high levels of heavy metals
- That the kratom is not mixed with undisclosed illegal substances or “cut” with other plant materials, like marijuana.
- That the alkaloids listed on the packaging are real
Our commitment to you: For your safety, for a quality and sustainable product, and for the continued legal availability of organic kratom, Memphis Kratom will only source from AKA-approved GMP vendors. You will get an honest product at a fair price, that is what it claims to be, and that is lab-tested and safe.
Kratom is best stored as you would treat fresh tea leaves – preferably kept in a cool dry place, free from extreme variations of temperature and changes in humidity. It is best kept away from direct sunlight and oxygen.
The ground leaf is best used within 1-3 months of obtaining it. While there is no evidence that the leaf “goes bad,” the active alkaloids in kratom can degrade over time or after exposure to extreme variations in temperature and/or humidity.
An airtight Pyrex dish stored in an interior location free from direct sunlight is usually sufficient to protect your product. Memphis Kratom also sells inexpensive options, like our branded storage containers.
Yes. The Tennessee Attorney General interpretation of law is here. Since the law was clarified in December of 2017, retail sales, possession and consumption of unprocessed kratom leaf has begun.
Uncompounded, organic kratom leafs and leaf powder – provided they are in their original biological state – are 100% legal in Tennessee.
Tennessee is not alone in reversing course on this moral panic. Five years ago, nearly two dozen states prohibited kratom. Since then, Kratom prohibition laws have been repealed all over the nation, including in Tennessee. Now, just six states prohibit this leaf, one that has been a godsend to 3 million daily users in the United States.
NOTE to our customers traveling from out of state: please check the legality of transporting, possessing or using kratom in your jurisdiction. The information presented herein applies to Tennessee only. Nothing presented herein is intended to constitute legal advice, nor does it constitute the establishment of an attorney-client relationship. It is informational only in relation to the state of Tennessee law as of July 2020.
